Several factors influence consumer behavior in India regarding the use of pharmacies. Understanding these factors is crucial for online pharmacy businesses to effectively tailor their strategies and meet customer needs.
In recent years, India has significantly transformed how people access healthcare services. The digital revolution has disrupted numerous industries, and the healthcare sector is no exception. In 2020, the digital pharmacy market in India was valued at INR 50.71B. The market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth (CAGR) of ~44.99% in 5 years, equating to INR 458.1B by 2026 (PR Newswire, 2021).
With the advent of technology, digital pharmacies have emerged as a convenient and accessible option for consumers nationwide. Understanding consumer behavior is crucial for digital pharmacies to effectively cater to the needs and preferences of their target audience. Digital pharmacies have emerged as a convenient and accessible solution, transforming how people access medications and healthcare products. However, there are still ample opportunities to improve the usage of digital pharmacies and make them more efficient and effective.
In Q3 2021, a study was conducted with a random sample size of 106 to gauge the consumer behavior of the Indian market. The survey included the 18 to 65 age group. ~72% were employed and self-employed.
Additionally, the survey included why they would prefer something other than ordering medication online. ~ 70% responded with a preference for using brick and mortar pharmacy, a.k.a local general medical store. ~30% responded using a digital pharmacy. ~43% responded because of the delay in the delivery of medications. ~23% responded for the condition and quality of medications, 14% responded for prescriptions filled accurately, 13% responded for not being user-friendly, and the rest, 7%, responded for not being cost-effective. See figure 1 for the summary of survey statistics.

The Indian market has seen a surge in the usage of digital pharmacies. There is significant scope for enhancing the use of digital pharmacies in the country.
1. Bridging the Accessibility Gap: While digital pharmacies have made healthcare more accessible for many, there are still segments with limited internet connectivity or technological literacy. Collaborative efforts between digital pharmacies and the government or NGOs can help bridge this gap. Initiatives like community-based digital pharmacy access points or partnerships with local healthcare centers can ensure that even remote areas can access digital pharmacies' benefits.
2. Raising Awareness and Educating Consumers: Many people in India are still unfamiliar with digital pharmacies and may hesitate to switch from traditional brick-and-mortar pharmacies. Increasing awareness about the advantages of digital pharmacies, such as convenience, affordability, and reliable product sourcing, is essential. Educational campaigns, online and offline advertising, and partnerships with healthcare professionals can play a vital role in educating consumers and building trust in digital pharmacy services.
3. Strengthening Data Security and Privacy: Data security and privacy concerns are critical factors in consumer adoption of digital healthcare services. Digital pharmacies must prioritize protecting customer data and transparently communicate their robust security measures. Implementing advanced encryption technologies, complying with data protection regulations, and conducting regular security audits will instill confidence in users and encourage wider adoption of digital pharmacy platforms.
4. Seamless Integration with Healthcare Ecosystem: To maximize the potential of digital pharmacies, seamless integration with the broader healthcare ecosystem is crucial. Integration can enable digital pharmacies to receive electronic prescriptions directly from doctors, offer medication reminders, and provide comprehensive healthcare solutions tailored to individual patient needs. Collaboration with healthcare providers, hospitals, diagnostic centers, and insurance companies can create a holistic approach to patient care.
5. Personalized Healthcare Experiences: Digital pharmacies can leverage technology to offer personalized healthcare experiences. By analyzing consumer data, such as medication history, preferences, and health conditions, digital pharmacies can provide tailored product recommendations, medication reminders, and health management tips. Customized solutions can enhance customer experience, increase medication adherence, and improve health outcomes.
6. Enhanced Customer Support: Providing excellent customer support is key to fostering trust and loyalty among digital pharmacy users. Responsive helplines, live chat support, and comprehensive FAQs can promptly address consumer queries and concerns. Moreover, having qualified pharmacists available for virtual consultations can enhance customer support and provide expert advice on medication usage, drug interactions, and potential side effects.
7. Collaboration with Local Pharmacies: Digital pharmacies can explore partnerships with local brick-and-mortar pharmacies to create a hybrid model that combines both advantages. Collaborative efforts can include leveraging local pharmacies' infrastructure for last-mile deliveries, facilitating order pickups, and providing offline consultation services. This approach can help bridge the gap between digital and physical healthcare services and cater to a broader range of consumer preferences.
As India embraces the digital era, consumer behavior in the pharmacy sector has significantly shifted. Digital pharmacies have emerged as a convenient and accessible alternative for consumers seeking quality healthcare products and services. Understanding the key factors driving consumer behavior, such as convenience, price sensitivity, trust, information, prescription management, and customer reviews, can empower digital pharmacies to tailor their strategies and deliver exceptional customer experiences. The potential for digital pharmacies to positively impact healthcare outcomes is immense. By harnessing these opportunities, digital pharmacies can become the healthcare system's cornerstone, providing convenience and accessibility.
